After 30 years together, my husband suddenly needed “space.” Then I found a hidden phone, followed him the next day, and saw someone I never expected.

“It’s my fault.”
Every head at the table turned.
Mine included.
The voice had come from my best friend, Karen.
She was sitting at the far end of the table beside her son, Luke.
For a few seconds, I honestly thought I’d misheard her.
“What?”
Karen looked terrified. Warren closed his eyes.
Miles muttered, “Oh, God.”
I stared between all three of them.
“No. Absolutely not.”
My sister put down her wineglass.
Her husband suddenly became very interested in his plate.
Our daughter, Natalie, looked at her brother.
“Miles, what do you know?”
He didn’t answer. I pointed at Karen.

“You just said this is your fault.”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
“What is?”
Her eyes filled.
Then Luke reached across the table and put his hand over hers.
That simple movement made my stomach twist.
Something was wrong. Something much bigger than a second phone.
Karen whispered, “I should’ve told you 31 years ago.”
