‘If $300 Matters That Much, You’re Poor,’ My Sister Laughed – The Next Morning, Mom Called Us About Her Will

Mia only wanted her sister to repay the $300 she’d borrowed. Instead, Amanda laughed at her for needing it, unaware that their mother had heard every word. By the following morning, both sisters were being summoned to a meeting neither of them expected.

My sister Amanda owed me $300 for almost two months when I finally asked for it back.

I wouldn’t normally have pushed.

Amanda and I had borrowed small amounts from each other before, and I hated talking about money with her because it always seemed to turn into a comparison I hadn’t agreed to.

But my car needed repairs, and money was tight.

So after Sunday dinner at Mom’s house, I quietly said, “Hey, can you send me that $300 tonight? I really need to get my car fixed.”

Amanda looked at me.

Then she laughed.

“If $300 matters so much that you have to ask for it, you’re poor.”

Her husband chuckled.

My face burned.

Amanda had always been the successful one.

Huge house. Luxury vacations. A new SUV every few years.

She had a way of talking about money as if people who struggled with it had simply failed to understand something obvious.

“You borrowed it from me,” I said.

Then I saw Mom standing in the kitchen doorway.

She’d heard everything.

She didn’t defend me or scold Amanda.

She just stared at her for several long seconds.

Amanda finally noticed.

“What?”

Mom shook her head.

“Nothing.”

I left ten minutes later.

The next morning, Mom called at 8:12.

“I need both of you here at ten,” she said.

“Is everything okay?”

“It’s about my will.”
