My husband’s aunt hugged me before the ceremony and slipped a key into my hand.
At first, I thought it was part of my wedding gift.

“Need it for what?”
She glanced toward the hallway.
“Just keep it somewhere safe.”
“Linda, what does it open?”
But she was already walking away.
I barely had time to process what had happened before my fiancé came into the room.

“I know. Mom sent me to—”
His eyes dropped to my hand.

“Where did you get that?”
I looked at the key.
“Your aunt gave it to me.”

“What did she tell you?”
“Nothing. Why?”
He reached for it.
“Give it to me.”
I pulled my hand back.
“Why?”
“It’s an old key. It doesn’t open anything anymore.”
“Then why do you care if I have it?”
He didn’t answer.

“Please don’t let her ruin today.”
And he walked out.
I stood there staring after him.
That was how I spent the last 20 minutes before my wedding, wondering what my husband’s aunt knew that my husband desperately didn’t want me to know.
