I overheard my husband and his grandfather talking about a woman’s body. I thought I knew exactly who they meant — until I heard something that made my blood run cold.

“Come here a second,” Ryan said. “If you promise not to tell anyone, I’ve got a video I want to show you.”
I stood in the hallway holding the wine bottle.
I heard his phone unlock.
His grandfather chuckled.
“You young people and your phones.”
“Just watch.”
For a few seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then I heard a woman’s voice coming from Ryan’s phone.
My voice.
I almost dropped the bottle.
It was muffled, but unmistakable.
I was humming.
The same stupid song I always hummed while getting ready for bed.
Grandpa said, “She doesn’t know you recorded this?”
Ryan laughed.
“No.”

Every hair on my arms stood up.
“Where’d you put the camera?”
“Bedroom.”
My stomach turned.
Then Ryan added, almost proudly, “She thinks that smoke detector has always been there.”
Something inside me went completely still.
Grandpa laughed again.
“You’re going to get yourself killed if she ever finds out.”
“She won’t.”
I pushed the kitchen door open.
The laughter stopped.
Ryan was standing beside the table with his phone in his hand.
His grandfather was leaning toward the screen.
