My MIL Showed Up on My Son’s First Day of School After I Asked Her Not To – Then His Teacher Pulled Me Aside

For weeks, my mother-in-law kept telling me I had chosen the wrong school for my son, yet every time I asked why, she gave me the same vague answer. On the first morning, I finally learned there was a reason she had been so determined to stop him from going.

The night before Ethan’s first day of school was one I’ll always remember.

My mother-in-law, Kayla, and I had one of the worst arguments we’d had in years.

She stood in my kitchen with her purse over one shoulder.

She was looking at me like I had made some reckless decision.

Instead, what I had done was enroll my six-year-old in a good school.

“You still have time to change your mind about the school,” she said.

“Ethan starts school tomorrow. Nothing is changing about that.”

“He can still start school tomorrow, but a different one.”

“I should find another school overnight?”

“There are other good schools I can recommend.”

I set down the lunchbox I had been labeling.

“We’ve had this conversation several times.”

“And you haven’t listened.”

“I listened. You just haven’t given me a good reason.”

She glanced toward my husband.

Luke was standing near the counter with his arms folded.

That irritated me immediately.

Every time Kayla brought up the school, she looked at him like she expected backup.

He never gave it.

But he also never shut her down.

I said, “It’s one of the best schools in the area.”

Kayla sighed. “That isn’t the point.”

“Then what is the point?”

She looked at Luke again. He looked away.

I felt my patience disappear. “Seriously, Kayla. Give me one good reason.”

“It’s just not the right school for him.”

“That is not a reason.”

“I’m trying to help you.”

“No. You’re trying to make a parenting decision that isn’t yours.”

Her face tightened. “Lori, you should listen to me.”

“No, you had your chance to raise your children. Ethan is mine.”

Luke finally said, “Can we not do this tonight?”

I turned to him. “I would love not to do this tonight.”

Kayla grabbed her purse strap. “I just think you’re making a mistake.”

“And I think you’re refusing to respect a decision Luke and I already made.”

She looked at Luke again.

I felt like the two of them were having a conversation without me.

I didn’t understand it then. I wish I had.

I said, “Don’t come tomorrow then.”

Kayla blinked. “Excuse me?”

“It’s Ethan’s first day. I don’t want another argument in front of him.”

“I’m his grandmother. I deserve to be there.”
