I thought sneaking into my husband’s retirement party would end with laughter and a surprised hug. Instead, one toast made my daughter grab my arm and left me wondering how much of the man I’d married I actually knew.

“Don’t turn around.”
Emma caught my wrist and pulled me behind a tall floral arrangement just as Lucas glanced toward the back of the room.
“What?” I whispered.
“Dad. He’s looking this way.”
I froze.
My 24-year-old daughter and I were hiding at my husband’s retirement party, and suddenly, our harmless surprise felt like a terrible idea.
There were at least 60 people in the private room of a downtown hotel.
Photographs of Lucas covered the walls, tracing nearly three decades of his career.
Everyone except his wife and daughter was apparently supposed to be there.
Three days earlier, Lucas had told me the exact opposite.
“There’s no party,” he had said.
I stared at him.
“You worked there for 28 years, and they’re letting you leave without a retirement party?”

Lucas shrugged.
“Just drinks with a few coworkers. Nothing for families.”
The explanation bothered me immediately.
